Fatal shooting at night: property owner under investigation after firing at robbers

Roberto Mollo, a 35-year-old lorry driver resident in Baldissero d'Alba, is under investigation for murder after shooting at a group of robbers caught in the courtyard of his family farmhouse, killing Gjovalin Lazri, 36, a barista of Albanian origin with a criminal record who had long resided in Turin. According to virgilio.it.

The incident occurred around two o'clock in the morning between Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September, in the small municipality of approximately one thousand inhabitants in the Roero Albese hills, in the province of Cuneo.

According to the reconstruction carried out so far, Mollo was allegedly awakened by noises coming from the family farmhouse, a property under renovation lacking gates and fencing, situated a short distance from the home where he was sleeping. Upon reaching the property, he allegedly surprised a group of four or five robbers apparently intent on stealing building materials, against whom he fired the entire magazine of the semi-automatic Beretta pistol he had with him.

Lazri was struck by bullets from Mollo's semi-automatic Beretta and died whilst fleeing. According to what was reported by La Stampa, the 35-year-old possessed authorisation to own the weapon, but not for carrying it: he would therefore not have been permitted to transport it and use it in a place other than his own home, not even in the family farmhouse where the killing occurred.

The Carabinieri of Bra, in collaboration with the Operations Unit of Cuneo, are conducting the investigation. It was Mollo himself who alerted the Carabinieri immediately after the shots were fired. Investigations are continuing into the circumstances of what occurred and into the authorisations relating to the firearm.

In the community of Baldissero d'Alba, Mollo is described as a well-known and well-liked person. In addition to working as a haulage contractor, he had also worked as a plumber and in 2014 had stood as a candidate in elections for the municipal council on the list of Mario Frea. A neighbour, when asked by Ansa, expressed solidarity with the man: "In my opinion he did the right thing: they violated private property, he shot and if he killed one of them, that one deserved it."

The mayor of Baldissero d'Alba, Michele Lusso, told journalists: "We are shocked, nothing like this had ever happened before; in the town there have been a few thefts from time to time but never anything serious. We are all somewhat shaken." Lusso described Mollo as "a very good person" who "dedicates all his time to work, works constantly, if not for his profession then for the house he is renovating," adding nevertheless: "I am surprised by such a reaction."
