The Verona magistracy has initiated a model 45 proceeding, currently without formal charges or identified suspects, at the request of the family of carabiniere Marco Piffari. The lieutenant was killed along with two fellow officers in the explosion that occurred on 14 October in Castel D'Azzano, for which the Ramponi brothers face charges of massacre.
The family's lawyers are seeking to shed light on certain aspects of the eviction operation that the officer was conducting that morning. In the days preceding the tragic event, Piffari had confided to friends and colleagues his unease about the mission. During a conversation in which a female friend had read his cards, he had said he felt "an alarm bell ringing inside me". He had added that he had understood the occupants were ready to resist, as they had already been evicted on three or four other occasions without success.
A woman in the police force had already reported to the judicial authority, just a few days after the catastrophe, that the lieutenant believed the operation had been underestimated and that the situation was far more complex than it appeared on the surface.
