Taranto, Bangladeshi immigrant arrested after knife assault in city centre

Officers from the Mobile Squadron arrested a 30-year-old Bangladeshi citizen in Taranto, accused of aggravated violence against public officials and unlawful possession of a cutting weapon.

The report came in yesterday evening in the historic centre: several residents alerted law enforcement about an Asian man in a state of violent agitation who was railing against anyone who approached him. A patrol from the Local Police that arrived at the scene also became a target.

When officers from the Mobile Squadron arrived, the situation deteriorated further. The suspect, who is of no fixed abode but with legal residence status, pulled out a large knife with a blade approximately ten centimetres long from his clothing and lunged at the officers.

After a brief but intense confrontation, the police officers managed to overpower the man and secure him inside a service vehicle. During the attempted escape, the knife was thrown into a nearby green area, but was found shortly afterwards.

The aggressive behaviour continued during transport and at police headquarters. Investigators suspect that the 30-year-old was still under the influence due to the consumption of psychoactive substances.

After the case file was passed to the duty magistrate, the detainee was taken into custody.
