During the night, officers from Taranto's Flying Squad arrested four individuals: two males and two females. The group is suspected of committing, in concert, aggravated theft and an attempted theft of parked vehicles.
The first alarm was raised in Via Dante, where unknown individuals had just forced open a car. The legitimate owner, alerted by a neighbour, provided investigators with a description of the perpetrators and the vehicle used: a dark-coloured station wagon.
The reconstruction of events indicates that the thieves smashed the windscreen of the vehicle, moved it a short distance and then abandoned it. From the rear compartment they removed an orange canvas bag containing professional tools.
Not far from the first incident, officers discovered a second car with a broken front window and the interior in disarray, a clear sign of another theft attempt.
The patrols immediately swept through the neighbourhood and the exit routes from the town centre, managing to stop the station wagon in Via Cesare Battisti. The four wanted individuals were travelling inside. The canvas bag with the tools stolen shortly before was found in the boot.
The vehicle was seized as it was without insurance cover. Three of those arrested, namely the two men and one of the women, have specific criminal records.
The documentation was transmitted to the duty magistrate, and the four were taken into custody.
The presumption of innocence for all those under investigation remains firm pending a final decision by the court.
