Law enforcement is investigating an attempted sexual assault that occurred during the night of 30 to 31 August on the cruise ship serving as the athletes' village for the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, according to ANSA Cronaca. The victim is a French volleyball player; the alleged attacker is a footballer of Moroccan nationality.
According to an initial reconstruction, the young woman repelled the man and called for help, attracting the attention of on-board staff. Medical personnel from 118 emergency services and police responded to the scene. The girl was taken to hospital for examination, which reportedly revealed no physical injuries; she subsequently returned to the athletes' village.
Investigators are examining footage from surveillance cameras on board the ship. The Moroccan footballer, according to reports, had already returned to his country of origin in the morning of 31 August.
