Record seizure of opioids at Turin bus terminal
According to questure.poliziadistato.it, the State Police have arrested a 44-year-old woman of Nigerian nationality for possession of narcotic substances for the purpose of trafficking. The operation took place at the bus terminal on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, as part of activities by the Mobile Squad against drug trafficking via private coach services.
During an inspection of a coach, investigators noticed the passenger was particularly agitated. When questioned about her personal belongings, the woman stated she had only one piece of luggage; however, travel labels revealed the presence of additional suitcases belonging to her. The baggage was subjected to a search at the Police Headquarters.
Inside the suitcases, 17,248 opioid tablets were found and seized, containing active ingredients with strong narcotic effects. Officers also found numerous travel tickets, baggage labels and a mobile telephone. These items made it possible to reconstruct her movements in the preceding days, including several international transfers from Nigeria to Italy during which the substances had presumably been transported.
Following completion of the investigation, the 44-year-old was arrested and made subject to an obligation to present herself at the Public Prosecutor's Office and a ban on residing in the municipality of Turin. The proceedings are in the preliminary investigation phase; the presumption of innocence applies until a final sentence is passed.
