European arrest warrant: 59-year-old from Buti stopped by Pisa carabinieri

A 59-year-old man living in Buti was arrested on the morning of 4 June by carabinieri from the investigative unit in Pisa, in execution of a European arrest warrant issued by Romanian judicial authorities. lanazione.it reports.

The measure is a consequence of a final sentence of six years and six months' imprisonment handed down in Romania for international drug trafficking — specifically illegal possession and introduction of dangerous drugs into the territory of the state.

According to what emerged from investigations by the foreign magistracy, the 59-year-old is reported to have taken part in extensive organised drug trafficking between Spain and Romania in the period between April and June 2025. The investigations made it possible to reconstruct his role within an articulated system of movement of narcotics.

The operation was conducted with the support of carabinieri from the local station, who identified the wanted man in the municipality of Buti, where he had established his residence. The intervention concluded successfully thanks to coordination between units of the Arma engaged in the search.

At the end of identification formalities, the man — assisted by lawyer Giulio Parenti — was placed at the disposal of the judicial authority pending decisions regarding the extradition procedure to Romanian authorities. The hearing is scheduled in the Court of Appeal for 9 July.
