Commemoration in Trieste for the killed police officers

Seven years ago, on 4 October 2019, a shooting at Trieste police headquarters killed two police officers, Matteo Demenego and Pierluigi Rotta. According to ANSA Cronaca, the shots were fired by Alejandro Augusto Stephan Meran, a Colombian national, during a visit to police headquarters regarding a scooter theft. The two officers were nicknamed the "sons of the stars".

Yesterday the tragedy was commemorated with a wreath of flowers in the pantheon of the police headquarters, followed by a mass in the adjacent church. In the morning the traditional football championship took place between local teams, won by the Police team.

Meran presented with mental health disorders. At trial he was found not criminally responsible, but a custodial security measure was imposed against him at a Residence for the execution of security measures for at least 30 years.

On the afternoon of Wednesday 7 October a conference is scheduled in the atrium of the Venice Giulia Chamber of Commerce, with the participation of the Prefect of Trieste Giuseppe Petronzi and Police Chief Lilia Fredella. Videos will be shown and a debate organised with representatives of the Police.
