Pathologists from the Gemelli hospital have begun examining the bodies of the three victims of the massacre that occurred in Rome's Casalotti district. The aim is to establish with precision the time of death and reconstruct the manner of the attack for the investigating magistrate.
The victims are a 39-year-old man, his 38-year-old wife and their eight-year-old daughter, all of Bangladeshi origin. The eldest son, eighteen years old, was the only one to survive the assault: following hospitalisation in critical condition, medical staff have now ruled out any risk to his life.
According to investigators, the attack was carried out by a fellow countryman of the victims, a 43-year-old man who disappeared on the evening of 26 June. The weapon used is believed to have been a butcher's axe, which was later found and seized by officers. The man, who is registered as residing in the Ciociaria area, has not yet been traced despite the release of his image and name by investigators.
The search has been extended across Italy, with checkpoints at national borders to prevent any possible escape abroad. One line of inquiry concerns an immediate escape on an electric bicycle, but the possibility that the fugitive may have taken his own life following the massacre is not being ruled out.
Regarding the motive, investigators are leaning towards a financial basis: disagreements over sums of money could have triggered the homicidal frenzy. However, every detail remains under review and awaits confirmation from ongoing investigations.
