Fake carabiniere fraud arrested in Trieste: thirty-year-old on assignment apprehended
Trieste State Police have arrested a 30-year-old man caught attempting to defraud an elderly woman using the fake carabiniere technique.

According to Google News IT — Crime (it), on 17 June the Mobile Squad of Trieste Police Headquarters arrested a thirty-year-old man whilst attempting to defraud an elderly woman resident in via Rossetti, using the so-called "fake carabiniere" technique.
The intervention was triggered by the victim's domestic help, who immediately recognised the attempted scam and alerted State Police. The man had contacted the elderly woman, posing as a member of the Carabinieri, a fraudulent method commonly used to persuade victims to hand over money or valuable items.
Investigators from the Mobile Squad set up targeted surveillance. The thirty-year-old presented himself at the residence to carry out the fraud and was caught red-handed and stopped by officers on the spot.
Subsequent investigative activities, coordinated by the Deputy Public Prosecutor on duty, Dr Tinonin, led to a search of the hotel room the man had rented for a few days. Inside, money and items were found relating to a further fraud committed the previous day. All recovered property was returned to its legitimate owner.
At the end of the investigation, the suspect was taken to Ernesto Mari Prison in Trieste, where he remains at the disposal of the Judicial Authority.
State Police renew their appeal to citizens, particularly elderly people and their families, to pay maximum attention to requests for money or handover of goods from alleged members of Law Enforcement or other public bodies, reporting any suspicious situation to the Single Emergency Number 112.
The proceedings are in the preliminary investigation phase. Based on the principle of presumption of innocence, the suspect's responsibility has not yet been definitively established.
