Four arrested in Genoa for cocaine valued at 70 million euros
A 32-year-old Uruguayan citizen is in custody in Italy alongside three Italian nationals, after police seized 128 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a lorry at Genoa port, according to elobservador.com.uy reporting with police sources.
The operation took place on 6 October, when Italian specialist police officers discovered the shipment. Authorities estimate the drugs have a value of approximately 70 million euros.
The judge in charge of the case ruled, following interrogations, that the four defendants remain in preventative custody. At least one of those detained claimed innocence, but the Italian courts opted to maintain the precautionary measure. The case was initially reported by Genova Today.
The Uruguayan involved had no active arrest warrants in Uruguay at the time of his arrest, although he did have a criminal record for drug and weapons possession, as well as investigations into theft and robbery, according to information obtained by El Observador.
The investigation remains under the exclusive jurisdiction of Italian authorities.
