Uruguayan arrested at Italian port with three accomplices over cocaine trafficking

A 32-year-old Uruguayan citizen was detained on 6 October at the port of Pra in Genoa, as part of an international drug trafficking operation, according to subrayado.com.uy.

The man, identified as Eros Nicola Castellan Airaldo, was found alongside three Italian citizens aged 39, 33 and 54 manipulating a container when police arrived at the scene following suspicious activity. Inside they found 128 kilos of cocaine distributed across 119 blocks. The drugs arrived in a container from Ecuador that had previously transported lemons, according to the newspaper Genova24.

The Guardia di Finanza, which led the operation, valued the shipment at 70 million euros. At the home of one of the detained Italians, police also found a sheet with notes about shipments from Guayaquil, Ecuador.

In recent hours, Italian authorities ordered that the four defendants remain in custody pending investigation, according to Genova Today.

Castellan Airaldo acknowledged his participation in the events, though he claimed the drugs did not belong to him. According to his account, he was sent solely to supervise the removal of merchandise from the container and received instructions by telephone from Uruguay. For this task, he was promised a payment of 10,000 dollars.
