Judicial hearing in Brescia: Pavia magistrates confirm legality of car rentals
ANSA Cronaca reports that a judicial hearing was held this morning in Brescia as part of the investigation into corruption and embezzlement involving the former deputy prosecutor of Pavia Mario Venditti and prosecutor Pietro Paolo Mazza, currently serving in Milan.
At the centre of the proceedings is the alleged mismanagement of the Pavia prosecutor's office, with particular reference to the rental of motor vehicles and the assignment of work for wiretaps. At the request of the defence, magistrates from Pavia Roberto Valli, Andrea Zanoncelli — now in Milan and the last to be heard —, Alberto Palermo, Valentina De Stefano and Valeria Biscottini were questioned.
"All the prosecutors declared that the use of the vehicles was lawful. The settlement decrees were authorised and the estimates were signed," said Domenico Aiello, Venditti's lawyer, at the end of the hearing before judge Marco Vommaro.
Aiello clarified that each prosecutor identified the administrative staff members who had indicated the need for the rental for reasons of service, but stressed that such staff members "do not appear in any investigation".
The lawyer further clarified that today's hearing did not address the Garlasco case strand, which concerns the hypothesis that Andrea Sempio's father, Giuseppe, paid to obtain the archiving of his son's case in 2017. According to Aiello, that archiving represents "the only safeguard for respect of the judgment", a principle he describes as "fundamental".
