A 39-year-old Local Police officer lost his life yesterday evening in the Lombardy capital. The man was pursuing an SUV that had failed to stop at a checkpoint. His service motorcycle crashed after approximately two kilometres of pursuit, in the Peschiera Borromeo area.

The driver of the vehicle, a 27-year-old boy originally from Albania, was identified this morning. Investigators traced him thanks to the vehicle's registration plate, an Audi Q7 hired out as a rental. He was apprehended at the home of a friend in Monza, where he lives in a typical ringhiera-style building.

During questioning, the young man explained that he had fled because he feared legal consequences. He was carrying a small quantity of hashish and was already subject to a duty to report to the judicial police. For this reason he decided not to comply with the stop order and accelerated.

He denied having hit or struck the motorcycle, claiming he had not noticed the crash. His version would find partial confirmation in the absence of impact marks between the two vehicles. As soon as he learned of the officer's death, he would have attempted to turn himself in, but investigators had already located him.

The 27-year-old said he was distressed and apologised to the State and to the victim's relatives. Prosecutor Francesca Crupi will ask the judge for preliminary investigations to confirm the preventive measure. To reconstruct the exact circumstances of the incident, recordings from surveillance cameras in the area are being analysed.
