On Monday evening, a municipal police officer in Milan lost his life in a pursuit on his service motorcycle. Francesco Imprezzabile, 39 years old, was chasing an SUV that had run through a checkpoint in the Ponte Lambro district when he fell to the ground in the municipality of Peschiera Borromeo.
The incident occurred around 21:30. The fleeing vehicle, a hired Audi Q7 with four people on board, continued despite the officer's signals. Imprezzabile followed the vehicle for approximately two kilometres at high speed, then lost control of the motorcycle and ended up on the asphalt. According to initial investigations, there would be no evidence of a direct collision between the motorcycle and the car.
The young driver, a 27-year-old with an Albanian passport, was traced the next day in Monza, where he had hidden at the home of an acquaintance who was among the passengers. During questioning, he explained that he had continued driving because he had a modest quantity of drugs on him and wanted to avoid legal trouble, as he was already subject to restrictive measures for a previous offence. He claimed he had not noticed the motorcyclist's fall and ruled out any contact between the two vehicles.
Technical analysis indicates that the motorcycle was travelling at approximately 180 kilometres per hour during the pursuit, with lights and siren in operation. Investigators are examining recordings from surveillance cameras to clarify every aspect of the incident.
The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, announced that a city mourning period will be decreed on the day the officer's funeral is held, which will be organised in the city. Sala also raised the issue of resources and equipment for local police, emphasising how the public order duties carried out by this force require tools comparable to those of state law enforcement agencies.
