A 35-year-old civil protection volunteer from Vieste (Foggia) and employed as an ecological operator has been held in prison since Friday afternoon on suspicion of deliberately setting eight forest fires in the municipalities of Peschici and Vieste in Gargano between July and August. The arrest was carried out by forest carabinieri as part of an investigation coordinated by the Foggia Prosecutor's Office. In connection with the precautionary measure, a search was conducted at the suspect's residence.
The man's lawyer, advocate Alessandro Petrone, confirmed the issuance of the custodial precautionary order. "There are five days to schedule the guarantee interrogation," the lawyer said. "I have not yet had the opportunity to speak with my client."
Petrone added that he has collected testimonies both from family members and from volunteers who have known the man for years: "He is a person against whom there has never been any suspicion".
