Moroccan authorities stopped a 56-year-old Spanish citizen at the Bab Ceuta border crossing while attempting to cross into Ceuta with approximately 28 kilograms of cannabis hidden in secret locations inside his vehicle.

Moroccan customs officers stopped a 56-year-old Spanish man at the Bab Ceuta border crossing after he attempted to bring in 27.6 kilograms of cannabis hidden in several locations inside a Mercedes C220 vehicle. The operation took place on Friday night as part of the stepped-up inspection campaigns carried out by Operation Marhaba, the Moroccan agency equivalent to Spain's Operation Strait of Gibraltar.
According to Moroccan newspaper al-Sabah, customs officials noticed some irregularities on the vehicle during routine inspection and decided to subject it to a thorough search. The drugs were distributed across modified cavities in the front and body of the car, which made their discovery considerably more difficult.
The complexity of the hiding places required the disassembly of several mechanical parts of the vehicle. The extraction operations took more than five hours, according to the same source.
Moroccan authorities believe that drug trafficking networks are exploiting the summer increase in traffic movement to attempt to bring drugs into foreign markets. Following the seizure, the public prosecutor ordered that the detainee be transferred to the regional judicial police in Tetouan to continue the investigation and determine whether there were other individuals involved in the operation.
