The judicial police in Tangier opened an investigation on Saturday into a police sergeant suspected of handing over thirteen kilograms of hashish to a driver headed for Europe, according to barlamane.com. The incident dates back to 17 September, during a search operation carried out within the Tanger Med port premises.
Agents had then intercepted a van driver in possession of hashish, after he had already passed through all border control procedures and was preparing to embark for a sea crossing. Analysis of surveillance recordings subsequently made it possible to establish that the goods had been handed over to him on the ship's docking quay itself.
The suspected perpetrator of this handover is a national security official with the rank of police sergeant, assigned to the port. He has since been arrested and placed in police custody, alongside the driver, at the disposal of the Tangier municipal police judicial service, under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor's office.
The investigation aims to establish the exact circumstances of the incident, its national ramifications as well as any possible international connections. Search operations continue in order to identify and arrest all persons involved, and to seize the proceeds of these activities.
The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has furthermore decided to provisionally suspend the police sergeant in question, pending the outcome of the judicial procedure and any disciplinary sanctions that might follow.
Tanger Med port, the kingdom's leading port complex and main transit point to Spain for rolling stock and passengers, regularly experiences seizures of cannabis resin concealed in vehicles destined for Europe. The monitoring of truck and van flows there constitutes a central focus of security measures.
