Three naval operations, 8.6 tonnes of drugs intercepted in the Caribbean and Atlantic
The French Navy seized more than 8.6 tonnes of narcotics during three separate operations conducted in early October in the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean, rci.fm reports. The largest seizure was made on 8 October in the middle of the Atlantic.
On that day, a French Navy vessel stopped a fishing ship without a flag in transit across the Atlantic. On board, military personnel discovered 150 packages that tested positive for cocaine, totalling 5,292 kilogrammes. On the order of the Public Prosecutor, the crew and cargo were transported to Fort-de-France.
The judicial investigation and the narcotics were handed over to the Caribbean OFAST. Five people were taken into custody.
Two additional interceptions with regional cooperation
Two further operations were conducted in the Caribbean Sea, in coordination with Colombian and Venezuelan authorities.
On 4 October, a fast-moving go-fast-type vessel without a flag was intercepted with the support of the Colombian Navy. The search resulted in the seizure of 16 packages containing cocaine.
On 13 October, a fishing vessel flying a Venezuelan flag was stopped. Military personnel found 166 packages containing both cocaine and marijuana.
These two seizures represent a total of 1,589 kilogrammes of cocaine and 1,727 kilogrammes of marijuana. The crews, vessels and cargo were handed over to Colombian and Venezuelan authorities for the continuation of judicial proceedings.
