A currency operator was robbed of nearly 52,000 soles after being attacked by a criminal gang in the heart of Jirón de la Unión, the Historic Centre of Lima. The violent robbery sparked controversy following the intervention of a security officer, which led authorities to order mandatory retraining in the handling of pistols and revolvers.
National Police General Óscar Arriola, the institution's top chief, confirmed that intelligence services have already identified three of the robbers who managed to escape. Specialised teams are conducting operations to locate and apprehend them, according to RPP. A fourth participant was taken into custody at the time of the incident.
The officer who acted during the operation is part of the Community Police and carries out administrative duties at the Monserrat Police Station. Internal reviews determined that his most recent weapons practice occurred a month before the incident.
After reviewing footage from last Monday, police leadership decided to strengthen training for all its members. For this purpose, the purchase of two hundred rounds of ammunition was arranged for use in target practice and tactical exercises. Arriola admitted that such situations repeat periodically: "This seems to be cyclical; these sorts of things keep happening."
The Jirón de la Unión area concentrates a large number of currency exchange shops, making it a frequent target for criminals. Investigators are analysing whether the perpetrators had advance information about the victim. The case remains in the hands of specialised units.
