"The Grave Robbers of Los Olivos" gang falls in Carabayllo with over 100 stolen mobile phones
The PNP arrested two suspected members of the gang in a residential property on Calle Las Fresas and recovered 113 devices valued at over 120,000 soles.
Operation in Carabayllo dismantles high-end mobile phone theft network
Agents of the National Police of Peru arrested in the early hours of Wednesday two suspected members of the criminal gang "The Grave Robbers of Los Olivos", engaged in the theft and illegal commercialisation of high-end mobile phones, according to exitosanoticias.pe. The operation was carried out on Calle Las Fresas, in the Las Palmeras urban development in the Carabayllo district.
The detained individuals were identified as Edgar Iván Vega Menor, 34 years old, and Marcia Estrella Huamán, 26 years old. In the rented room where they were arrested, officers recovered 113 mobile devices—111 high-end iPhones, 11 Samsung phones, 1 ZTE and 1 Redmi—valued at over 120,000 soles, allegedly destined for sale in domestic and international markets.
Colonel PNP Oscar Nakandakari provided details of the findings: "They were captured in a property where rooms are rented. After entering with the owner's authorisation, officers were able to reach one of the rooms and found the citizen's mobile phone. There were also 111 high-end iPhones, 11 Samsung phones, 1 ZTE and 1 Redmi".
The intervention began following a report filed by a 22-year-old young man who had his mobile phone stolen during the afternoon of last Wednesday. According to preliminary investigations, the victim was intercepted by criminals travelling on a motorcycle, a recurring method in several districts of Lima.
In addition to the mobile phones, officers seized two laptops that were allegedly used to unlock the stolen devices, as well as four bank cards from different financial institutions. Both detainees were taken to the Sol de Oro police station, where they remain whilst investigations continue.
The authorities noted that the operation allowed them to dismantle part of a suspected network that was operating in different districts of the capital. The investigation into the origin of the recovered devices remains open, and police have not ruled out the possibility that other individuals are linked to this criminal organisation.
