Arrest in Lima for crime and disappearance in San Martín
Peru's National Police has arrested the main suspect in the killing of a six-year-old child and the disappearance of his mother, according to rpp.pe. The operation was carried out at a property on Avenida Gregorio Escobedo in the district of Jesús María.
The detainee was identified as Alexis Alcántara Tellería, 42 years old. Initial police investigations indicate he was the last person seen with Zoila Castillo and her young son, reported missing since 16 May after embarking on a journey to Tarapoto.
The child's lifeless body was found on Wednesday in the locality of Uchiza, in the San Martín region. The Preliminary Investigation Court of Tocache issued a preliminary detention order against Alcántara Tellería for seven days. The suspect is being formally investigated as the alleged perpetrator of aggravated homicide against the minor.
Following the arrest, the National Police reported that the detainee will be handed over to the competent judicial authorities to determine his degree of responsibility in the matter.
In parallel, the Public Prosecutor's Office and law enforcement continue with proceedings aimed at establishing the whereabouts of Zoila Castillo, who remains missing, as well as clarifying the circumstances and motive of the crime.
