The Counter-Terrorism Directorate (Dircote) of Peru's National Police activated "immediately" on Monday an investigation following the circulation of a video containing alleged death threats against President Keiko Fujimori, biobiochile.cl reported citing data from EFE news agency.

The audiovisual material shows Emiliano Oré Rojas, a former Senate candidate, allegedly making statements linked to the possibility of attempting against the life of the head of state. According to the same source, the statements were made in early September during a virtual meeting held as part of a gathering of activists from regions in the south of the country.

The Interior Ministry released a statement on Monday clarifying that Dircote is carrying out the necessary steps to establish the true identity of the participants and to verify the authenticity and integrity of the audiovisual material. The ministry added that the investigation also seeks to determine the context in which the statements were made and whether there are acts of coordination or agreement linked to the facts.

As part of the process, the elements obtained have been forwarded to the Public Ministry through a report for the corresponding actions within its competence, according to the official statement.

President Fujimori spoke during a public event on the same Monday and stressed that the case is now in the hands of the Police and the Public Ministry. "The first thing I can say is that I am not afraid and I will not back down in all this effort to achieve order and security in our country," she said. "If they think that with this type of commentary they will make me back down, they are mistaken. I believe that my political life demonstrates that, that I will never take a step backwards," she added.
