Two arrested for murder of gubernatorial candidate in Áncash in Caraz

Two people detained for murder of regional candidate in Caraz
Two people have been captured in Peru following the murder of Susy Aponte—popularly known as la China Polo—a broadcaster and candidate for governor of the Áncash region, according to elespectador.com.
Aponte was shot last Saturday whilst conducting a campaign activity at a market in the town of Caraz, in the north of the Peruvian Andes, where she was seeking to head the regional government.
The suspects have been identified as Luis Iván Obispo Díaz, a Venezuelan national and alleged author of the shots, and Ronald José Toro Artila, a Peruvian national. Both remain in preliminary detention for a period of up to 15 days, as reported on Monday by the Public Prosecutor's Office.
A judge extended the detention period whilst preliminary proceedings advance: collection of evidence at the crime scene, review of security camera footage in the area, and questioning of witnesses and the injured, among other procedures. During that period, the Public Prosecutor's Office must decide whether to request preventive imprisonment or some other restrictive measure involving liberty.
Previous complaints and police reassignments
La China Polo had gained prominence on social media with a programme of exposing corruption in Áncash, a region in which almost all of its previous governors have been implicated in scandals.
Before being murdered, Aponte published a message on her social media in which she accused Víctor Revoredo, director of Criminal Investigation of the Peruvian National Police, of having "ordered an attack" against her. The candidate stated that she had reported alleged links between police chiefs and the criminal gang Los Pulpos, and claimed to have been warned of that threat by inmates from three Peruvian prisons.
Revoredo was reassigned from his post by means of a supreme resolution published on Sunday: his new position is director of International Affairs of the Peruvian National Police. Along with him, another 19 generals and three lieutenant generals of the institution were also reassigned following the appointment of Fredy López as new commander general, in replacement of the controversial Óscar Arriola.
