According to infobae.com, the Peruvian Public Prosecutor's office confirmed on Monday that the two suspects in the murder of Susy Alponte—known as 'China Polo'—will remain in preliminary detention for a period of up to 15 days. A judge extended the measure whilst investigations proceed: evidence collection at the crime scene, review of security cameras and statements taken from witnesses and injured parties.
Alponte, a communicator and candidate for governor of the Áncash region, was shot dead last Saturday during a campaign event in a market in Caraz, a locality in the northern Peruvian Andes.
The two detainees have been identified as Luis Iván Obispo Díaz, a Venezuelan national and alleged perpetrator of the shots, and Ronald José Toro Artila, a Peruvian national. During the detention period, the Public Prosecutor's office must decide whether to request preventive detention or release with restrictions.
'China Polo' had gained notoriety on social networks with a complaints programme in Áncash, a region historically plagued by corruption: almost all of its previous governors have been embroiled in scandals. She was running precisely to lead that regional government.
Days before her death, Alponte posted a message on her social networks in which she accused the director of Criminal Investigation of the Peruvian National Police, Víctor Revoredo, of having "ordered an attack" against her. The candidate had reported alleged links between police chiefs and the criminal gang Los Pulpos and stated she had been warned of that threat by inmates from three Peruvian prisons.
Revoredo was reassigned from his position through a supreme resolution published on Sunday, and now heads the International Affairs division of the National Police. Along with him, another 19 generals and three lieutenant generals of the institution were also reassigned following the appointment of Fredy López as new general commander, replacing the controversial Óscar Arriola.
