Two officers from Peru's National Police (PNP) were shot on Friday evening outside the Colegio Pacífico, located on Andrés Avelino Cáceres Avenue in San Juan de Miraflores, whilst carrying out security duties ahead of the second electoral round. According to infobae.com, both officers—a woman and a man—were inside a private van parked outside the polling station.
The attack occurred around 10 p.m., according to a report by Latina Noticias. Two men got out of a black vehicle with the intention of stealing the van, unaware that two police officers on duty were inside. Upon discovering they were dealing with police officers, the criminals opened fire twice.
One of the shots grazed the female officer's forehead; the other made a superficial impact on her colleague's chest. Both officers received immediate medical attention and were taken to Santa Marta Hospital, where they remain stable and out of danger, according to the San Juan de Miraflores Police Station.
Following the attack, the assailants fled at high speed down block three of Andrés Avelino Cáceres Avenue. Security cameras in the area recorded that a mototaxi accompanied the suspects' escape. Police authorities are analysing the footage to identify those responsible for the attempted robbery and the assault on the officers.
Residents of the sector expressed concern about the increase in robberies and drug dealing in the area. They noted that, despite the installation of security barriers to improve safety, criminals continue to use escape routes in the area. Authorities are reinforcing surveillance around polling stations ahead of the upcoming electoral day.
According to DIPROVE, the most frequently stolen vehicles in Lima are from the Toyota, Hyundai and Kia brands, with models such as the Toyota Hilux, Toyota Rush, Hyundai Tucson and Kia Rio among those most sought after by criminals. The districts of Carabayllo, Comas, San Martín de Porres, San Juan de Miraflores, Villa María del Triunfo and Villa El Salvador account for the majority of these crimes in the northern and southern zones of the capital.
