Santa Catalina company suspends service after driver killed in Villa El Salvador
Vehicles from the Santa Catalina transport company did not operate on Thursday, 12 March, in protest at the murder of one of its workers, who was shot dead the previous day by criminals travelling on a motorbike.
The victim was identified as Michel Hurtado Serna, a driver for route 23A of the consortium, which covers the route between central Lima and Villa El Salvador. The killing occurred while he was driving along Circunvalación Avenue, in the Villa El Salvador district.
According to witness accounts, the attackers approached the bus stop and fired at close range at the driver, killing him instantly. The attackers subsequently fled with an unknown destination.
From the depot located in San Juan de Lurigancho, the buses remained parked and were guarded by two National Police patrol cars. A workers' spokesperson explained that the strike measure was in response to solidarity with their fallen colleague.
The drivers' representative stated that, to date, three company workers have been shot and demanded that authorities take concrete action to stop attacks against transport workers. He also questioned the effectiveness of the supposed protection measures, noting that previous meetings with police commanders had not produced tangible results.
