Computer fraud leads cyber crimes in Peru: 19,602 reports in seven months

Computer fraud is the most reported cyber crime in Peru, according to businessempresarial.com.pe. Between January and July 2026, the Public Prosecutor's Office recorded 29,118 reports of computer crimes; of these, 19,602 correspond to computer fraud and 7,431 to identity theft. Both modalities account for more than 92% of the cases reported in that period.
Alan Medina, Head of Cyber Security at Global66, attributes the increase to the acceleration of digital channels and to the pressure that scammers exert to make victims act without verifying the identity of who is contacting them. "Fraud attempts increasingly exploit digital channels and, above all, seek to make people act quickly without verifying who is behind a message, a call or a link," Medina notes.
The specialist indicates that prevention involves adopting concrete habits: protecting access credentials, distrusting unusual requests, and using only the official channels of financial institutions or service providers.
Medina highlights three priority actions: verifying the source of any link before clicking on it, never sharing credentials or verification codes under any circumstances, and reacting immediately to any unrecognised transaction. "These actions can make the difference against a fraud attempt," he adds.
