The Ministry of the Interior ordered the general commander of Peru's National Police, Fredy López Mendoza, to head the investigation into the murder of journalist and candidate for the Regional Government of Áncash, Susy Aponte Polo, which occurred on Saturday 19 September in Caraz, larepublica.pe reported.
López Mendoza will lead the operation alongside the head of the National Criminal Investigation Directorate (DIRNIC), general PNP José Zavala Chumbiauca, and specialised DIRINCRI personnel. The Interior Ministry noted that the decision responds to a commitment to conduct the case "with the highest level of technical rigour, operational presence and permanent coordination with the Public Ministry".
The attack also left other people at the scene with gunshot wounds at the time of the incident.
Two Venezuelan citizens have been detained as a result of initial police proceedings. The first, identified as L.I.O.D., aged 39, was apprehended in flagrante delicto in Caraz on the same day as the crime and is named as the suspected perpetrator of the acts. The second, R.J.T.A., aged 29, was captured in the early hours of 20 September in Lima and transferred under police custody to Caraz, where his suspected involvement in the case remains under investigation. Both remain at the disposal of the authorities.
López Mendoza is already in Caraz and held an initial working meeting with representatives of the Public Ministry and the team of specialised investigators to assess progress in the case and define urgent proceedings.
Subsequently, the teams carried out technical inspections at the main points linked to the investigation: the crime scene, the suspected escape route and the accommodation where people involved in the inquiries are believed to have stayed. The actions seek to reconstruct the sequence of events, compare the information obtained and identify new evidence.
