Citizens call march in Ancash following death of regional candidate
According to infobae.com, the death of Susy Aponte Polo, known as 'La China' Polo, will mobilise citizens and supporters in Caraz, Ancash this Sunday. The call convenes a gathering in memory of the journalist and candidate for the Regional Government of Ancash for the grouping Socios por Ancash, with the aim of demanding justice and swift progress in the investigation of the crime.
The gathering is scheduled for 15:00 at the Los Olivos market in Nuevo Chimbote, under the name of "Great march for peace".
The attack occurred on Friday 19 September on Ramón Castilla Avenue in Caraz, two days before the scheduled march. Aponte Polo, 44 years old, was murdered during a live broadcast on social media. The crime was recorded in the video: gunshots are heard and it can be seen how several people around her fall to the ground amid the chaos. Five people were injured by gunfire projectiles, including three minors; all were taken to San Juan de Dios Hospital in Caraz.
The Prosecutor General, Tomás Gálvez, confirmed the detention of the alleged perpetrator of the homicide and two other people suspected of having participated in the planning and execution of the crime. "The hitman has already been detained. A supposed financier has also been detained (...) and also another person who was previously transporting the hitman," Gálvez told RPP Noticias.
One of those apprehended is a Venezuelan citizen aged 30, detained on the Central Highway, opposite the Palmira junction. During the apprehension, the Peruvian National Police (PNP) seized a Glock pistol calibre 9 × 19 millimetres that was registered with a theft report from November 2023 in Villa El Salvador, Lima. The authorities are seeking to establish how the weapon reached Ancash and who facilitated its transfer and use.
A second detainee, aged 29, was apprehended in the district of Surco, Lima, after intelligence officers identified the vehicle in which he was travelling. Proceedings continue under the charge of the PNP and the Public Ministry to determine the degree of participation of each of those detained in the crime.
