Two teenagers detained for murder of bus driver in Callao
Peru's National Police detained a 13-year-old adolescent and his 17-year-old accomplice as suspected perpetrators of the murder of a public transport driver in Callao, according to biobiochile.cl reporting information from the EFE Agency.
The driver, 60 years old, worked for transport company Perla Argentina S. A. (PASA) and was attacked on Friday morning while picking up passengers at the junction of Avenidas 2 de Mayo and Miroquesada. The alleged principal perpetrator shot him up to seven times before fleeing with his accomplice.
In an initial intervention, police detained in flagrante delicto A.O.G., 34 years old, alias "Negra", identified as the leader of the criminal gang known as "Los Calacos Injertados", and a 14-year-old minor.
Hours later, general Olger Benavides Ponce, head of the Callao Police Region, confirmed to TV Perú that operational intelligence work made it possible to identify and locate the two minors suspected as principal perpetrators of the crime.
Benavides noted that the 17-year-old adolescent attempted to conceal evidence by throwing his mobile phone onto the roof of his home when officers arrived. A police drone located the device, which contained extortion messages linked to the crime.
Security cameras proved key to identifying the suspects. In one of the images, one of them can be seen wearing the same trainers that were found during the operation in one of the raided homes.
Police seized from the minors a pistol, mobile phones, a bicycle and the trainers allegedly used at the moment of the attack. The two adolescents were taken to the headquarters of Callao's Criminal Investigation Directorate to continue proceedings.
Over the last two years, extortion of public transport drivers has become commonplace in Lima and Callao, where small gangs demand payments under threat from drivers, many of them from the informal sector.
