Nine Ecuadorians from Los Tiguerones Trux detained in Trujillo with FBI support
Peru's National Police arrested nine Ecuadorian citizens in the beach resort of Huanchacho, Trujillo, in a joint operation with the FBI.
Joint PNP-FBI operation captures Ecuadorian gang in Trujillo
Peru's National Police (PNP) detained nine Ecuadorian citizens allegedly linked to the criminal organisation Los Tiguerones Trux in the beach resort of Huanchacho, in the northern province of Trujillo, according to information reported by larepublica.ec based on official sources. The operation had direct collaboration from the FBI.
The nine arrested individuals are being investigated for the alleged crimes of membership in a criminal gang, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, illegal possession of explosive material, illicit drug trafficking, and human trafficking.
Among the assets seized during the operation were a mini Uzi submachine gun, a revolver, nine dynamite cartridges, four rounds of ammunition, 23 mobile telephones, three scales, and approximately one kilogramme of marijuana.
Also confiscated were two notebooks containing notes of alleged extortion quota collections, 2,490 soles in cash—equivalent to 734.5 dollars—a vehicle, a cloth with the inscription "Los Tiguerones Trux", and other items deemed of interest to the investigation.
The PNP also noted that documents linked to one of those detained were found and that it is coordinating with Ecuador's Police to verify the identities of the detainees and their possible criminal records.
The United States Embassy in Lima also disseminated information about the operation and indicated on its social media that the PNP and FBI are "working together". The diplomatic mission described the arrested individuals as alleged members of a "narco-terrorist gang born in Ecuador" known as the Tiguerones Trux. United States Ambassador Bernie Navarro described the action as part of the so-called "Shield of the Americas".
This coalition against transnational organised crime was promoted by United States President Donald Trump. Peru's President Keiko Fujimori confirmed on 10 September the adherence of her country to the initiative, following a meeting at the Government Palace in Lima with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Fujimori reaffirmed to the United Nations General Assembly in New York that the fight against crime and transnational organised crime is a priority of her government, and presented the incorporation into the Shield of the Americas as evidence of the "firm commitment to work" with countries in the region to address this phenomenon.
