A man was shot dead in the early hours of Tuesday, 15 September outside the Wholesale Fruit Market in the La Victoria district, Lima. According to infobae.com, the victim was identified by the National Police as Jorge Lara Almanza, who carried out cleaning work and provided parking assistance for vehicles on the fifth block of Avenida Pablo Patrón.
The attack occurred at around 3:45 in the morning, a time when the area concentrates workers and lorries supplying the market. Images from surveillance cameras, distributed by Latina Noticias, show the arrival of a motorcycle taxi from which gunfire was opened against the victim.
In the video, Lara Almanza, identified by his white polo shirt, is seen crossing the roadway near a parked lorry. From the motorcycle taxi at least 14 shots were fired, according to the outlet cited. The man fell after being hit by several bullets; some people quickened their pace during the attack, whilst other workers continued with their activities in the surrounding area.
Witnesses from the area indicated that Lara Almanza would usually arrive between 2:00 and 2:30 in the morning to clean the area and assist with the entry of vehicles to the market. Neighbours and workers consulted stated that this would not be the first time a violent incident had occurred at that point in La Victoria, and also mentioned robberies and other criminal episodes in the surroundings of the produce centre.
Initial accounts gathered in the area suggest that the homicide could be related to the collection of extortion payments. However, that hypothesis remains under investigation and has not been confirmed by the authorities.
