Regional governor candidate for Áncash shot dead during campaign
A journalist and candidate in Peru's regional elections was shot dead on Saturday while holding a campaign event at a market, according to elmostrador.cl.
Susy Aponte, 44 years old and an aspirant for the governorship of the Áncash department, was attacked while touring a market in the Caraz district with supporters. She was standing for elections scheduled for 4 October.
The attack left five people wounded by gunfire, who were transferred to the regional hospital. Police reported in a statement that a Venezuelan citizen was detained.
Aponte ran the news portal "China Polo Dominical", where she published reports on alleged irregularities and corruption within the police. Days before the attack, she had warned on her social media accounts that she was receiving threats from prisons.
The Council of the Peruvian Press demanded an investigation into the murder. "It is necessary that the motives behind the homicide are clarified. Other cases of murders have not been clarified," the institution stated on its social media accounts.
According to the police, four Peruvian journalists were murdered in 2025.
