The police in Peru carried out an original operation in Lima, capitalising on World Cup football fever. Agents from the special unit Green Squadron disguised themselves as the official mascots of the tournament—a bald eagle and a moose—and approached the house of a suspect inadvertently on the day of the opening match.
Upon arriving at the entrance, they gave the signal to begin the operation. With the help of a battering ram, they broke down the door and the rest of the police forces burst into the residence, immobilising the 48-year-old man, who allegedly dedicated himself to cocaine trafficking.
During the search, the authorities seized more than 2,500 containers of cocaine, as well as a firearm, whilst the detainee was arrested and taken before the competent authorities.
The video of the operation was published by the Peruvian police and went around the world, with images of the two mascots participating actively in the raid.
This tactic is not a novelty for the Peruvian police. The special unit Green Squadron has become known in recent years for the creative disguises of its members, who on occasion have appeared as Santa Claus, the Grinch, Deadpool, Wolverine and even as a capybara, in order to surprise suspects and carry out arrests.
