Anti-drugs operation in Lima yields seizure of more than 725,000 ecstasy pills

Peru's anti-drugs police seized 725,850 ecstasy pills and mass-production machinery during an operation at several properties in Lima, according to the Interior Ministry. According to lajornadamaya.mx, the authorities also secured 55 kilos of MDMA powder—the active ingredient in ecstasy—an amount with which approximately 77,000 additional pills could have been manufactured.

The estimated value of the synthetic drug, which was being sold in nightclubs across the country, amounts to around 18.6 million dollars. Two people were detained during the operation.

In one of the residences, an automatic pressing machine was found that shaped pink pills into cube forms. Officers also recovered a pill counter, a dryer and a substance mixer.

"They are becoming more sophisticated in the manufacture of this type of drugs," said the head of the anti-drugs police, Manuel Vidarte, to the América Noticias channel.

The seizure comes months after, in March of this year, Peruvian authorities carried out an unprecedented seizure of one million pills also in the capital, according to local press. At a global level, ecstasy consumption is on the rise: it ranks among the most consumed substances, according to a UN report from this year.
