Funeral honours in Lima for police officer killed in Madre de Dios
The remains of third-class technical non-commissioned officer of the PNP Joel Ríos Conquinche, member of the Directorate of Special Operations, arrived in Lima following his death in an operation against illegal mining in the Madre de Dios region, reported rpp.pe.
The coffin was transported in a PNP aeroplane and, upon landing, six officers from the institution carried it on their shoulders. The Peruvian flag rested on the coffin, which was subsequently raised by his colleagues as a sign of tribute.
The Minister of the Interior, César Astudillo, was present at the reception ceremony, as was the general commander of the PNP, Fredy López Mendoza, who accompanied the relatives and friends of the fallen agent.
Operation against "The Guardians of La Pampa"
The operation in which Ríos Conquinche lost his life took place in an area controlled by the criminal group known as "The Guardians of La Pampa", identified for alleged illegal mining offences, contract killing, kidnapping, extortion and illegal possession of firearms.
During the intervention, PNP agents seized a significant arsenal in the possession of the alleged criminals. A wounded agent was immediately transferred to the regional hospital in Madre de Dios to receive medical attention.
More than twelve detained in parallel operations
In a broader context, general Víctor Revoredo Farfán, head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (Dirincri), reported that more than twelve people have been detained in connection with the murder of four people during the kidnapping of mining businessman Jenss Lara Tantaquilla, who was subsequently released.
Revoredo Farfán clarified that these interventions are part of the operations carried out to dismantle the transnational criminal organisation Los Pulpos, active in the La Libertad region.
