Shooting murder in Surquillo: man dies in front of his daughter as gunmen escape on motorcycle

A man was shot and killed on Sunday by two individuals travelling on a motorcycle in the Lima district of Surquillo, according to infobae.com citing the Serenazgo of the jurisdiction and RPP. The attack occurred around 17:00 hours on the fifth block of San Lorenzo Street.

The victim was identified as César Camacho Izaguirre. He was accompanied by his 23-year-old daughter when one of the attackers descended from the vehicle, opened fire and returned to the motorcycle to flee with his accomplice. Both were travelling without helmets.

A neighbouring witness who saw the events said he had lived in the area for more than thirty years and had never seen a crime of that nature there before. Authorities are investigating the identity of those responsible, the motive for the attack and whether the victim had received previous threats.

Violent precedents in the district

The homicide adds to a series of armed attacks recorded in Surquillo in the preceding months. In July, a 19-year-old food delivery worker was shot dead outside Market No. 2. Two men arrived at the location and began shooting; the young man tried to escape but became cornered on the pavement, where the attackers shot at him again before fleeing. Eleven bullet casings were left on the public street.

That same month, three men died in another attack on the ninth block of Tomás Marsano Avenue, at the intersection with Salvador Allende Street, in the Villa Victoria area. Initial investigations indicated that the victims were alongside a barber shop that would have belonged to two of them, who were also cousins. Two gunmen opened fire and fled, causing passers-by to run to safety.

Government response

The crime occurs just days after president Keiko Fujimori announced the creation of a "unified command" to combat crime, made up of the Police and the Armed Forces. The initiative involves the installation of a control and operations centre from which actions against criminality will be directed.

"Surely, criminal scourges will try to frighten us, but they are mistaken, not with this government, we are firm, united, we will not stop until we recover peace and order in our country," Fujimori said last Friday after visiting El Milagro prison in Trujillo, where heads of organised crime gangs who have operated in the north of the country are held.

The president also noted that "elite forces" have been deployed to the most dangerous areas of the country, and thanked the Armed Forces and National Police for their effort in the fight against citizen insecurity.
