Police Discipline Unit Officer Arrested Following Traffic Accident While Intoxicated

A sub-officer of the National Police of Peru was detained on Thursday afternoon in Huancayo after causing a vehicular collision under the influence of alcohol, elbuho.pe reported.

The person detained was identified as Omar Martín Mejía Tinoco, aged 38, who works in the Discipline section of the police institution. The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. at the intersection of Avenida Yanama with Jirón San Martín.

Police sources indicated that Mejía Tinoco showed visible signs of having consumed alcoholic beverages at the time of his intervention. The sub-officer was driving a grey Chevrolet Prisma with licence plate BLU-138 when the collision occurred.

The complaint was filed by Jorge Manuel Meneses Huamán, the driver of the other vehicle involved, identified with licence plate BJD-503. Following the complaint, officers proceeded to detain the sub-officer and his vehicle at the scene.

Mejía Tinoco was taken to Huancayo police station for case proceedings. The breath test produced a positive result, with a level that reportedly exceeded the limit permitted by law, according to the same sources.

The sub-officer also faces a complaint regarding the traffic accident. According to police sources, Mejía Tinoco belongs to the Police Inspectorate and maintains close ties with an officer in that unit. The case was handed over to the competent authorities to determine corresponding responsibilities.
