Three arrested in murder of regional candidate 'La China' Polo in Caraz
The investigation into the murder of Susy Aponte Polo has yielded two new arrests: an alleged financier and the person who transported the Venezuelan hitman.
Two new arrests in the case of 'La China' Polo's murder in Caraz
The investigation into the murder of Susy Ysabel Aponte Polo, known as 'La China' Polo, has recorded two additional arrests following the capture of the alleged hitman, according to infobae.com. Attorney General Tomás Gálvez confirmed to RPP Noticias that among those newly detained is a supposed financier and a person who allegedly transported the attacker before the murder.
"The hitman has already been detained. An alleged financier has also been detained [...] and also another person who was previously transporting the hitman," Gálvez said. The Attorney General indicated that investigations are advancing to establish the degree of responsibility of each person involved.

Aponte Polo, a 44-year-old broadcaster and candidate for the Ancash Regional Government representing the Socios por Ancash party, was shot on Saturday 19 September on Avenida Ramón Castilla, in Caraz province. The attack was recorded in a live transmission by journalist and lawyer Víctor Castillo: the footage shows several gunshots and, seconds later, the candidate's fall and that of people around her.
Peru's National Police (PNP) confirmed her death from gunshot wounds. Five people were injured in the attack, including three minors. The injured adults were identified by the initials R.A.M. (55 years old), P.O.P. (72), A.A.J. (33) and C.A.C.H.L. (18). All were transferred to San Juan de Dios Hospital in Caraz.
Capture of alleged hitman and weapon seized
Following the attack, PNP officers deployed an operation on the Central Highway, opposite the Palmira junction, where they detained a 30-year-old Venezuelan citizen with the initials L.I.O.D., identified as the alleged perpetrator of the murder.
During the intervention, a Glock pistol calibre 9×19 millimetres, serial number BTVG236, was seized. The weapon was registered as stolen in a report filed on 15 November 2023 in Villa El Salvador, Lima. The Police and Public Ministry are seeking to determine how the weapon reached Ancash and how it came into the possession of the detainee.
Third arrest in Lima
As part of proceedings, police officers detained a 29-year-old man in Surco, Lima, allegedly linked to the case, following intelligence work that made it possible to identify the vehicle he was using. The authorities did not specify whether this arrest corresponds to the alleged financier or to the person who allegedly transported the hitman.
A specialist team from Lima's Homicide Division travelled to Ancash to strengthen investigations into the planning of the attack and the involvement of those detained.
Vigil and public march
As the investigation advances, Aponte Polo's family called for a vigil on Saturday evening. A march in the area was announced for Sunday 20 September.
