Court initiates proceedings against 16-year-old following fatal beating in Kraków
According to an informal investigation by Polsat News reporter Dominika Orzeł and a report by the Interia news service, 16-year-old Jakub L. — the first person detained in connection with the brutal beating in the Willowy district of Kraków's Nowa Huta neighbourhood — was on leave from a correctional facility at the time of the incident. The teenager's detention on Monday came after 36-year-old Jakub C., alias Yankes, leader of Hutnik Kraków supporters, was attacked in the night of 20-21 August and died in an ambulance on the way to hospital.
On Wednesday, Jakub L. was brought before Kraków's family court. The hearing was closed to the public and lasted seven minutes — police officers present were also asked to leave the courtroom before the hearing began, according to Orzeł's informal findings. Initial media reports suggested that the court had not imposed any legal measures on the teenager and that he would be released.
However, the Polsat News reporter established that the court initiated proceedings concerning delinquency or commission of a criminal act and found grounds to investigate Jakub L.'s involvement in the incident. Because the teenager is already a resident of a closed correctional facility and was merely on leave, the court overseeing his placement ordered his immediate return to the facility. No new educational measures were imposed.
According to police, the gathered evidence leaves no doubt as to the 16-year-old's participation in the beating — according to Orzeł's information. Wirtualna Polska further indicated that at least one witness to the incident recognised Jakub L.
The entire incident was recorded by surveillance cameras. The footage shows a group of five men attacking Jakub C. using, among other things, machetes and pepper spray dispensers. For over four minutes they kicked and beat the defenceless man as he lay on the ground. An unconscious Jakub C. was found by a passer-by, who called emergency services.
According to police, the main suspects in the case are members of the so-called Młoda Ferajna — a fighting group linked to Wisła Kraków club.
