Preliminary detention for 18-year-old following grandparent scam

As reported by Google News PL — Crime (pl), the District Court in Rzeszów ordered three months' preliminary detention against an 18-year-old Czech citizen arrested in connection with a fraud committed against an 83-year-old resident of Rzeszów.

The previous week, the pensioner went to the police. The day before, during the night hours, she received a phone call from an unknown person who asked her about gold jewellery and beads, and then informed her that her grandson could go to prison. Shortly afterwards, a young woman came to the 83-year-old's flat and took from her a small pouch containing 600 dollars and gold rings. The stranger left the flat without a word.

Officers from the criminal division of the Rzeszów municipal police headquarters immediately began gathering evidence and securing traces. They quickly identified a person who might be connected to the incident and established that she was located within the Małopolskie Voivodeship.

Help was requested from officers of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Tarnów. The 18-year-old was detained in one of the local hotels and then handed over to the Rzeszów criminal police. During a search of the hotel room, police found over 1,200 zlotys, four gold rings and a pouch similar to the one described by the victim.

Officers from the investigation and prosecution division showed the 83-year-old the secured items — the woman confirmed that they belonged to her. The case file was sent to the District Prosecutor's Office for the city of Rzeszów, and the prosecutor filed a motion for detention with the court. The District Court granted this motion and ordered the 18-year-old Czech woman to be held in custody for three months.

Officers are investigating whether the detainee also participated in other similar frauds.
