A resident of Działdowo County in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship lost 215,000 Polish zlotys after being deceived by fraudsters impersonating bank employees.
77-year-old woman defrauded in "bank employee" scam. Lost 215,000 PLN
A resident of Działdowo County in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship was defrauded of 215,000 zlotys by criminals who posed as bank employees. A report of the crime was filed at the Police Headquarters in Lidzbark on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.
The perpetrators deceived the 77-year-old woman by claiming that a dishonest employee at a bank branch had taken out a loan in her name. To allegedly prevent further fraud, they persuaded the elderly woman to take out loans from several financial institutions and withdraw her own savings. The woman transferred the money to a "courier" designated by the fake bankers.
The entire scheme lasted from the end of June to 6 July of this year. The fraudsters convinced the victim that taking on these obligations would lower her credit rating and prevent further loans from being fraudulently obtained by the alleged dishonest bank employee.
Police reminds the public that genuine bank representatives never ask for account login details by telephone, transaction codes, installation of additional applications, or transfer of money to unknown persons. If fraud is suspected, one should hang up and independently contact the bank using the official number.
