Deadly attack at school east of Warsaw

A 15-year-old Polish teenager fatally stabbed the caretaker of his former school on Thursday, according to noovo.info citing authorities. The caretaker, aged 37, worked at Jean-Paul II primary school in Leszczydol-Nowiny, a locality situated 70 kilometres east of Warsaw. Two other adults were also injured during the assault.

A spokeswoman for the regional police, Katarzyna Kucharska, specified that the caretaker was the first target. A teacher and the school's headmaster attempted to overpower the attacker, striking him with a knife before police arrested him. The suspect was apprehended at the scene.

This attack forms part of a series of concerning incidents in Poland in less than 24 hours. The same morning, police arrested a 17-year-old boy in Sierpc, 125 kilometres north-west of Warsaw, after he had expressed his intention to perpetrate "something grandiose" at his school. Authorities discovered two knives in his flat.

The day before, a 19-year-old student had wounded nine people with a knife at a vocational school in Ostrołęka, 120 kilometres north of Warsaw. Investigators found explosives in a bag abandoned by the suspect on the school premises.

In response to these incidents, prime minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting with the ministers for Home Affairs, Digital Technology, National Education and Health, as well as the coordinator of special services and the commander-in-chief of the National Police.
