A court in Dębica decided to remand an eighteen-year-old from Chorzów in custody for three months. The young man was linked to a criminal group operating using the counterfeit money method.
An unknown caller telephoned the elderly woman. He claimed that counterfeit banknotes were in circulation, and officers needed to collect them for inspection. The victim did not believe this story and refused to let the "courier" into her home.
The 88-year-old quickly notified the police. Criminal investigators appeared in the vicinity of her residence and detained the man who had come to collect the cash. The value of losses that the perpetrators intended to inflict reached 35,000 zloty.
The District Prosecutor's Office requested the application of temporary remand in custody. The court upheld this request on Friday. Fraud carries a sentence of up to eight years' imprisonment.
