Knife attack in Jarosławiec: Ukrainian Ihor M. remanded in custody for three months
The District Court in Jarosławiec has remanded Ihor M., who attacked five people with a knife at an abbey, in custody for three months. The detention is being served under hospital conditions due to symptoms of mental illness.

According to polsatnews.pl, the District Court in Jarosławiec upheld a request from the prosecution on Saturday and remanded in custody Ihor M., a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen suspected of a knife attack on Thursday at an abbey in Jarosławiec. The man will spend at least three months in custody, but due to his health condition, this measure will be served under hospital conditions.
The court hearing began at 13:30. The decision was announced after 14:00 by Bożena Harasz-Wołoszyn from the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Przemyśl.
"The court upheld the prosecution's request and remanded the suspect in custody for a period of three months. Due to the suspect's state of health, the suspect was not brought to court; the court's ruling contains an indication that this measure should be applied under hospital conditions," Harasz-Wołoszyn said.
Symptoms of mental illness and inability to be questioned
On Friday, Małgorzata Taciuch-Kurasiewicz from the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Przemyśl reported that Ihor M. displays symptoms of mental illness and is being held at a psychiatric facility. Court-appointed psychiatrists have found him to be suffering from acute, multifaceted psychotic disorder.
The current state of the 31-year-old makes it impossible for him to participate in court proceedings, including questioning. The prosecution indicates that the suspect is experiencing severe psychomotor agitation, disorganised thought processes and lack of logical contact. The man requires antipsychotic treatment.
The experts' opinion concerns only Ihor M.'s current mental state. His criminal responsibility at the time of the attack is to be assessed in a separate expert report.
Three charges: murder, attempted murder and grievous bodily harm
On Thursday, Ihor M. allegedly attacked five people with a knife at an abbey in Jarosławiec. One of the most seriously injured priests died; four other people sustained injuries. On Friday, the prosecution brought three charges against the man: murder, attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm.
Arrival from Germany and vehicle towed away
From investigations so far, it has emerged that before the attack Ihor M. travelled to Poland from Germany and intended to return to Ukraine. He attempted to cross the border at Korczowa, but was not allowed through because his vehicle did not have valid insurance. The vehicle was to be towed to Jarosławiec. It was in this way that the man came to the city, where the attack at the abbey occurred on Thursday.
