A 31-year-old Ukrainian will face prosecution for murder and attempted murder after stabbing five people at a Benedictine abbey in Jarosław, in south-east Poland, according to information.tv5monde.com. One priest died from his injuries; the four other victims are hospitalised but out of danger.
Malgorzata Taciuch-Kurasiewicz, spokesperson for the Przemysl prosecutor's office, announced on Friday at a press conference that charges had been brought against the suspect, identified as Ihor M. The charges include murder, attempted murder and grievous bodily harm resulting in total work incapacity exceeding eight days. He faces life imprisonment.
The attack took place Thursday morning at the Benedictine abbey, located approximately thirty kilometres from the Ukrainian border. The suspect entered the premises, took a knife from the kitchen, then stabbed three monks and two lay people before being arrested by police in front of the church without offering resistance.
His psychological state has not yet allowed investigators to question him or formally notify him of his charge. His motives therefore remain unknown at this stage. Wounded during the attack, he is currently hospitalised in a psychiatric care unit.
According to initial investigation findings, Ihor M. had entered Poland from Germany during the night of Wednesday to Thursday, with the intention of reaching Ukraine. He was however turned away at the Korczowa border crossing, as his vehicle lacked the required insurance. He then turned back towards Jarosław.
