The case of Marian Banaś, former chairman of the Supreme Chamber of Control, is entering a decisive phase. Proceedings conducted by the prosecution are approaching completion, and charges against the politician may soon be brought to court.
Investigators have accused Banaś of pressuring colleagues to disclose information protected by tax secrecy. Such an act constitutes a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment. If an indictment is brought before the judiciary, the former head of the NIK will stand before the accused's bench.
Banaś headed the Supreme Chamber of Control from 2019 to 2024. His tenure was repeatedly criticised by the opposition, and the politician himself was a controversial figure in Polish politics. The current charges relate to the period when he served as chairman of the chamber.
The decision on whether to bring an indictment rests with the prosecution. If the case goes to court, it will be one of the most significant trials concerning a high-ranking state official in recent years.
