Arrest in Poland following alleged assassination plot targeting government

A suspect was detained in Poland on Sunday in connection with an alleged assassination attempt targeting Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, according to lefigaro.fr. Tusk himself announced the arrest on X: "The man who threatened to commit an attack has been arrested," he wrote, thanking the police for "its swift and decisive intervention."

The arrest was also confirmed on the same social network by Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski.

Alert transmitted by State Protection Service

Earlier in the day, the Interior Ministry made public the existence of a report transmitted to police by the State Protection Service (SOP). "A report concerning a possible assassination attempt targeting Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as well as Vice Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, was transmitted to police through the SOP," declared Ministry spokesperson Karolina Galecka during a press briefing.

She specified that the competent ministers had ordered measures to be launched, and that officials from the police, SOP and the Internal Security Agency were participating in an emergency meeting at Warsaw's Counter-Terrorism Centre.

"Strong probability that the threats could be carried out"

The spokesperson for the co-ordinating minister of special services, Jacek Dobrzynski, told journalists that the case was being treated "with the utmost seriousness." "Month after month, year after year, increasingly more threats and alarming messages of all kinds are reaching the police, the SOP and the services concerning Poland and the Polish people," he stated. He added that in this particular case, "we are talking about a strong probability that these threats could actually be carried out."

Context of security tensions

Poland, a NATO and European Union member, has been on high alert since September, following several knife attacks in school facilities involving minors or young adults. Prime Minister Tusk had denounced on Thursday a "pervasive cult of violence in the world" that "has reached Poland."
