Man arrested in Poland on suspicion of planning attack

According to dw.com, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Sunday 11 October the arrest of a man accused of planning a murder against him and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak. The arrest came hours after the Interior Ministry convened an emergency meeting following police reports of a possible attack.

"The man who threatened an attack has been arrested," Tusk wrote on X, praising police for their "swift and decisive action". The suspect, approximately 60 years old, was arrested in Lower Silesia in the south-west of the country. Security services identified him through comprehensive analysis of content posted online.

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski stated that the detainee apparently belongs to "very radical groups" and establishes radical contacts via the internet with various individuals. Kierwinski indicated that "at this stage it is probably too early to state whether there may be any foreign factor" in the case.

Poland, a close ally of Ukraine since the Russian invasion in 2022, has repeatedly warned about risks of Russian sabotage and hybrid warfare on its territory. Moscow has rejected these accusations.

Interior Ministry spokesperson Karolina Galecka told the AFP agency that police were searching the suspect's flat. Intelligence and security services receive "increasingly more threats and disturbing messages," according to the spokesman for the ministry coordinating special services, Jacek Dobrzynski, who added that in this case there is a "high probability that these threats could actually be carried out".
